Lovely Pair of Lambeth Doulton Candlesticks with the makers mark of Lilly Partington

THE STORY - On a trip to my favourite Antique Shop in Thanet the area of Kent where I live, there sitting on the counter was this pair of Doulton Lambeth Candlesticks. I have always loved the works of Royal Doulton and their factories and overtime have had several examples in my shop. This pair of candlesticks with their lovely raised pink daisy decoration have the Doulton Lambeth Stamp and a model number of 8506, which I believes dates them to the period 1924-1927 and it is so lovely to have the makers mark of LP which I am pretty certain is for Lily Parton who worked at Doulton Lambeth in the 1920s and 1930s and during this period was promoted to the position of Senior Assistant. It is so lovely to find a pair of candlesticks and there shape has such beautiful simplicity to it with their round bases and short neck spreading into lovely organic bulb shape bowls where the candles sit. Each one has a lovely earthy green coloured glaze which almost has a marble effect and brown rims around their bases and on top of the bowls. And then of course there is the gorgeous little pink daisies three of them around the base. I love their little yellow centres and their pinks and white petals spreading outwards. Each of the candlesticks differ in depth of colour which I hope you can see from my photos with one being somewhat lighter than the other. There is one little mystery to these candlesticks which I have been unable to find any answer to and that it the impressed letters J.H.W. around the rim of the underside of the base and I do wonder if this could be a retailers mark.

AGE - 1924-1927

CONDITION - Each candlestick is in very good condition with no chips or cracks that I can see. As I have already mentioned one candlestick is darker in colour than the other but both carry the same makers marks on the underside of the base so I really do think they are a pair. There is some dirt inside the bowls which has accumulated over time and as always I will leave it to their new owners to decide whether to clean this away or not.

What I love about this little pair of candlesticks is the combination of the simple shape of the candlesticks and the sweet daisy decorations with the beautiful organic colours of the earthy green glaze and although they are small I have to say they stand very proud. And I cannot help but sense this little pair have long been cherished both at the time of purchasing them and then for many years afterwards and with their simple beauty I have to say I understand why.
