Antique Papier Mache Patch Box

This little round papier mache box, is I believe not a snuff box as it is I think too shallow for that but a box for the patches the ladies of the Georgian era placed on their faces and bodies. These patches were originally used to cover pox marks and other such marks but they then became very fashionable and used to signify certain attributes about the lady's personality depending where they were put and apparently there is even an argument that these patches were used to signify whether the lady who wore them was a Whig or a Tory depending on which side of the face she placed them. There is a wonderful hand painted image of a woman in a green dress adorning herself with her gold necklace and I absolutely love the way the curls of her hair have been painted. The box is in good condition with no cracks or chips but there are some signs of wear to the painting itself which I hope you can see from the photographs but luckily none on her face. The box measures approx 3&1/4" in diameter and 1/2" in height.
I guess this little box will never again be used again for patches, which I guess is a fashion never to return which is lucky for the less wealthy of us as although the rich ladies patches were made of fine silk or velvet I understand the patches for the less wealthy were made of dead mouse skin! But this little box is a wonderful item from the past which conjures up such imaginations of the lady whom originally owned it and her lifestyle but it is also an item which does today have it's uses but probably not for dead mouse skin face patches!
